History of the B-66 Destroyer and Tactical Warfare

                B-66 "Destroyer" Website
Courtesy of USAF Col (Ret) Paul E. Duplessis, Webmaster

This website documents the role of the various versions of the
B-66 Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare Aircraft
and commemorates the men and women who flew or
supported the B-66 program between 1952 to 1976.

I flew a total of 1,763 hours as an Electronic Warfare Officer
in the E/RB-66 aircraft over 9 years ('57 to '66), including flying
100 combat support missions over North Vietnam (8/1965 to 3/1966)

My flight records (AF Form 5a) show that during my 29 years in the USAF,
I flew a total of 2,923.6 hours in twenty-one (21) different types of aircraft,
including 18.25 hours in the
Convair XC-9 out of Kelly AFB, TX  in August 1954.

Primary emphasis on this website is on tactical EB-66 electronic warfare missions
conducted over North Vietnam that were flown during the Southeast Asia conflict from
1965 to 1974. Major U.S. campaigns supported by EB-66s included
Rolling Thunder,
Linebacker, and Pathfinder Missions.

Historians have described the North Vietnam air defense environment as the
most sophisticated enemy defense system the United States has ever flown against.
The major threats to U.S. aircrews was a combination of Soviet anti-aircraft
artillery (AAA) systems, airborne intercept (AI) fighter aircraft
MIG-17s and MIG-21s, and SA-2, surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems.

For Example
 On 25 February 1966, a surface-to-air missile (SAM) struck and crippled RB-66C
serial 54-0457
'Gull One' . The engagement occurred 10-miles northwest of Vihn,
North Vietnam, while heading 270 degrees at 28,000 feet. A 11-page article written
by Norman Malayney was published in American Aviation Historical Society Journal.

LtCol Gene Hambleton ( BAT 21Bravo ) was the navigator and lone survivor of
an EB-66C shot down by a North Vietnamese SA-2 surface to air missile (SAM).
His 12-day rescue was one of the most bizarre rescues of the Vietnam War.
A movie has been made and a book was written about this daring rescue.
The EB-66C (Newark 01) pilot’s description of a dogfight between
two F-4Cs and three MIGs that saved an EB-66 aircraft and its crew.

These two EB-66 units earned the Presidential Unit Citation for valor in combat, numerous
Outstanding Unit Awards with V-device, and equivalent U.S. Navy citations. EB-66 flyers
earned Silver Stars and Distinguished Flying Crosses for heroism, Air Medals galore,
and numerous Purple Hearts... attesting to their courage and sacrifice.
Total B-66 aircrew
casualties during the 24 years the B-66s were operational is 79, including the 8-year
Southeast Asia conflict where 12 were killed in action (KIA), one missing in action (MIA)
and 15 POWs released at the end of the conflict. The information published on this site
was provided by former B-66 personnel, AF Personnel Office, military buddies, family
members, friends and associates who knew the people involved.
